Why we exist

The idea for the Siaya Education Project became clear in Phoebe Oyugi’s mind when she lived in The Netherlands between the years 2015-2018. While in Holland, the socio-economic difference between her mother country Kenya, and Holland became crystal clear to her. Phoebe wondered how the poverty gap in her home town could be bridged. The answer was to focus on sustainable education of the teenagers in Siaya. This was motivated by the famous quote of the great African leader Nelson Mandela (RIP) “Education is the greatest shield for old age”. If a child from a poor background is given a chance to complete secondary school, the child will get employment and later break the vicious cycle of poverty in their community. Of great importance was the completion of secondary school, since primary school is free of charge in Kenya while in secondary schools, fees have to be paid. It is so sad that the majority of the academically gifted children could not make it to secondary school making their future to be bleak. SEP would be the bridge of hope to such children.

Hello, I am Ogutu Hilary 22 years old and a second year student pursuing Bachelors of Technology in Medical Engineering at Kirinyaga University. Being one of the pioneer sponsor kids of Siaya Education Project (SEP) in the year 2015 I was fortunate and I am very proud of the support I have received; because someone very far away believed in me (Gerard Huybens). He made sure there were no obstacles towards me accessing education. "

"I joined Siaya Education Programme (SEP) in 2013 when I was in Form Two under the guidance of my teacher, Mr. Oluoch Paul. SEP created for me a conducive environment for learning, free interaction amongst the students and our teachers as well as the spirit of sharing. SEP gave me the three E’s being Education, Exposure and Experience."
